What It’s Really Like Out and About with Multiples

A big thank you to Lesa Rhoton for sharing this video. Her daughter shows what it’s like to be out and about with multiples, infants in particular.

On behalf of all twin moms, I apologize for the “bad enough” comment.

Yes, some of the comments are just lovely. We all love hearing how adorable our babies are. But the rest? The negative stuff, in particular, the profanity, the horror, and getting into our reproductive business? Being a celebrity when you want a nice day with your family? It can get tiring. We do get used to it, and we find our defense phrases. Mine was usually, “I’d rather have my hands full than empty.”

Can you relate? What’s your defense phrase?

  1. Oh my…I’ve seen this video before. Someone who knew that I had triplets felt compelled to share it with me. I just took my boys to the zoo yesterday for the first time. It was insane to say the least. I’m so tired of the “you have your hands full,” “More power to you,” “I’ll pray for you,” “Can I have your picture,” “Are they twins?” Sadly, the list goes on. I’m not a fan of the celebrity it makes me in having triplets, but I’m with the poster: I’d rather have my hands full than empty ANY day! Thanks for sharing this video so more people can see just what it’s like for us!!

  2. I always stalk triplets. I can’t help it! I tell the parents, “I’m a triplet” and “I have twins.” Maybe it helps the parents see that kids grow up (when you’re in the midst of baby hell). But really I do it because I see perspective on my mom’s life.

  3. I have to admit I like the attention. Sure some of the questions are dumb, (“are they a boy and a girl?” when one’s dressed in pink and the other in blue, and the follow-up, “then you’re done!”, as though having one kid of each sex were items to check off the to-do list). But I’m so proud of my kids, I don’t mind putting up with the occassional “you have your hands full.” It’s nice to receive so much reognition for being a parent.
